How to Protect Your Business from Social Media
When social media was introduced, businesses were quick to realize its potential in marketing and advertising. In response to this demand, social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube optimized their services to accommodate them. What many do not know is that while it is capable of growing businesses, it also poses threats to their security. The security risks of social media can have devastating effects on any business even if they don’t use it.
These risks, when exploited or overlooked, can jeopardize a company’s reputation and ruin a brand. The safety and personal information of its staff and customers could be compromised, including their payment details such as credit, debit, and bank accounts. A business may suffer significant losses both in earnings and patronage.
You can avoid these setbacks and protect your business with the following steps:
1. Educate your employees.
A lack of social media presence won’t exempt your business from its dangers. Employees may unknowingly share information about your company, the staff, and its customers on their personal accounts without realizing that criminals can use them to their advantage. By educating employees, you can help them understand why they should keep information private in the first place.
2. Set policies on social media usage.
Social networks serve various purposes, from connecting with friends to finding jobs. Some of them are less secure and less appropriate than others. Business owners are encouraged to create policies that regulate the access of employees across social media platforms. Associating with off-color networks shouldn’t be allowed – access should be limited to reputable sites. Specific guidelines must be set regarding their online behavior (i.e. what they are allowed to say, what they can post). Remember that employees represent your brand to consumers. Their actions will reflect on your business and must be guided accordingly.
3. Employ maximum security.
Social media platforms are equipped with privacy settings which are constantly updated and improved. Companies with an active social media presence are encouraged to utilize them in the best possible way. As a business, you must opt for settings that provide the highest level of security. Employees must be taught how to use them as well. These will deter cyber criminals from stealing information about your company and its clients.
4. Consider a non-disclosure agreement.
A better way to protect your business is to have employees sign a non-disclosure agreement that restricts them from sharing any information regarding their employment on social media. This may include the name of your company, the nature of their employment, products and/or services you offer, and so on. The agreement prevents your business from being misrepresented online and helps preserve your reputation.
5. Hire a team of experts.
Having a team of IT professionals has its perks. You get to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and threats to social media security. Employees can be monitored for their compliance to policies and non-disclosure agreements concerning social media. Larger businesses should invest in a third-party security provider or consultation services. They can offer insights on how to minimize the risks of social media.
